Why We Want to Increase Awareness of Living Donor Liver Transplant

Why is it important to increase awareness of living donor liver transplant? According to United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS), in 2021 about 11,500 people in the United States were put on the UNOS liver transplant list. Of those, about 80% received a new liver (8,667 via a deceased donor and 569 via a living donor). This left a shortage of about 2,214 people. In other words, 20% of patients who needed a liver transplant couldn’t get one. These patients died or are still waiting. The number of organs available via deceased donor is limited. But if we could double the number of living donor liver transplants each year, the gap could end by the end of 2023! Everyone who needed a liver could find one. This is why this the Living Liver Foundation (www.livingliver.org) was created. It is dedicated to increasing awareness of living donor liver transplant.
